Schuylkill Twp. contracts out garbage billing
The Schuylkill Township supervisors are going to save money, and rid themselves of the headache of sending out garbage bills.
And they are going to get more money from interest by changing financial institutions.
Monday night, the supervisors voted to hire PA Municipal Services, Oakmont, Allegheny County, to do the trash billing for the township.
Supervisor Gary Feathers said PA Municipal Services provided the lowest price to do the billing.
“Doing garbage bills is a lot of work, and costs us a lot of money,” Feathers said. “PA Municipal Services can do it for $1.10 per household. It costs us $3.50 per household. They will take care of collections, and the delinquents, right up to when (township Solicitor) Joe (Baranko) files a lien against the property.”
PA Municipal Services provides various billing services, as well as tax collection for municipalities, according to its website.
The supervisors also approved a resolution to join the Pennsylvania Local Government Investment Trust, an institution that provides banking and other financial services to municipalities.
“They will pay a lot more interest than we are getting now through the bank,” Feathers said. “We are getting 0.5% now, and we will be getting 5.0% with PLGIT. They will give us more lucrative things to do with our funds.”
Mark Buccieri, the township road foreman, said the second round of summer road paving has been completed by Schuylkill Paving Co.
But Feathers asked that payment be withheld until corrective measures are taken to address two problems - a six-inch dropoff near a drain at the bottom of Mine Street in Brockton, and the sealing of two streets.
Buccieri said line painting of roads in the township has not been completed because of rain. Feathers said two days notice by the company doing the work was not sufficient.
More quotes to pave the basketball court in Tuscarora and remove a tree on Seneca Street must be obtained before those projects can be completed, Buccieri said.
Feathers said Oct. 9 is the deadline for applications for the Hometown Hero flag program so that more flags can be ordered.
Trick or treat is from 6-8 p.m. Oct. 28.
The supervisors also voted to move their next work session to 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 2 to begin planning the 2024 budget.
