Highway named after firefighters killed in W. Penn

A state highway will be named after two New Tripoli volunteer firefighters who lost their lives fighting a West Penn Township house fire last year.

“Heroes Highway” recognizes Community Fire Company firefighter Marvin Gruber and Assistant Fire Chief Zachary Paris, and will span along Route 143 in Lynn Township, Lehigh County, from the intersection of Route 309 to the Berks County border.

The Pennsylvania Senate passed a bill Wednesday to name the road after the fallen firefighters.

The bill also names highways and bridges after military personnel, emergency responders and Pennsylvania Department of Transportation workers.

The bill notes that Gruber and Paris were among scores of firefighters called to a house fire on Dec. 7, 2022.

“Firefighter Gruber and Assistant Fire Chief Paris were trapped in the blaze and tragically lost their lives in the line of duty,” according to the bill. “Firefighter Gruber and Assistant Fire Chief Paris were 59 years of age and 36 years of age, respectively, at the time of their deaths.”

Gruber and Paris entered the burning structure along Clamtown Road in West Penn Township and became trapped on the second floor of the home.

Also through the bill, a number of PennDOT workers who died in the line of duty or on their way to work will be honored.

In Carbon County, a bridge on Bridge Street in Weissport is named for Ralph Strubinger, who lost his life in October 1977.

In Schuylkill County, a bridge that crosses the Little Schuylkill River along Route 443 is named for William Hoffman, who died in October 1970.

Caitlin McGarry lost her life in April of 2017. The bridge named in her honor is part of Route 443 in Schuylkill Haven and crosses the Schuylkill River.

Also in Schuylkill County, a bridge on Little Mountain Road in Union Township that crosses Little Catawissa Creek is named in honor of Joseph Zienkiewicz, who died in June of 1981

In Monroe County, A bridge on Route 209 over Middle Creek in Polk Township is named for Charles Gardner; a bridge on Route 191 over Brodhead Creek in Stroud Township is named for Gordon Brink, and a bridge on Route 924 over the railroad in Gilbert is named for Walter Skubel.

The bill now advances to Gov. Josh Shapiro’s desk for his signature.
