Local Roundup: Results from Sept. 25

Lehighton’s two soccer teams both earned victories on Monday.

BOYS SOCCER

Pine Grove-Jim Thorpe

Kayden Spence scored two goals and Jim Thorpe held off a late Pine Grove rally to gain a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory.

Spence’s tallies, along with a goal from Cael Heaney, helped the Olympians build a 3-0 advantage before Nathan Frankenfield trimmed the deficit to one with a pair of goals.

Blake Barberio made seven saves for the winners, who also received assists from Heaney and Noah Geiser.

The win upped Thorpe’s record to 7-4 overall and 6-2 in the league. Pine Grove dropped to 7-3 and 4-2.

No. Schuylkill-Lehighton

A pair of second-half goals lifted Lehighton to a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory over North Schuylkill.

The Indians trailed 2-1 at the break, but received scores from both Sawyer Hoffman and Jaxson Strauss to pull out the win.

Gabe Reed also tallied for the winners, who received assists from Strauss, Jacib Anthony and Jacob Hall.

Scoring for the Spartans were Jordan Bowers and Bryce Cuthe.

Lehighton keeper Bryce Miller finished with 11 saves.

The Indians, winners of four straight, are now 7-5 overall and 4-4 in the league. North Schuylkill slipped to 6-6 and 3-5.

Pleasant Valley-Parkland

Parkland remained undefeated after narrowly defeating Pleasant Valley, 1-0, in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference action.

Kyle Tobia scored the game’s only goal off an assist from Caleb Daniels to help the Trojans move to 11-0.

PV keeper Zach Prator made 13 saves.

The loss dropped the Bears to 7-6.

Wilson-Palmerton

Wilson earned a 2-1 overtime victory over Palmerton in Colonial League action.

Trevor Anthony accounted for the Blue Bombers’ only goal, while keeper Dillon Lombardi ended with five saves.

Palmerton fell to 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the league, while the Warriors are now 8-4 and 6-3.

GIRLS SOCCER

Southern Lehigh-Palmerton

Hannah Barry broke a scoreless tie three minutes into double overtime to give Palmerton a 1-0 Colonial League victory over Southern Lehigh.

The game was a resumption of the Sept. 7 contest that was suspended at the 17:32 mark of the second half.

Blue Bomber goalie Emma Snyder recorded the shutout, making 12 saves, to help her team improve to 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the league.

The Spartans are now 7-4 and 5-3.

Catasauqua-Lehighton

Lehighton received goals from five different players in gaining a 5-0 non-league victory over Catasauqua.

The Indians jumped out to a 2-0 first-half lead on goals by Karissa Moyer and Charli McHugh. The winners put the contest away in the second half as Avery Bauder, Riley Walker and Mylee Lutsko all scored.

Bauder also added a pair of assists, while McHugh and Lutsko each had a helper.

Ciara Behrel posted the shutout, making 10 saves, as Lehighton evened its mark at 5-5.

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Tamaqua earned its fourth shutout of the season, posting a 3-0 Schuylkill League victory over North Schuylkill.

Kimmy Rudy and Addison Rummel both scored in the opening half as the Blue Raiders built a 2-0 lead. Sarah Hope added an insurance tally in the second half to help Tamaqua improve to 7-4 overall and 5-2 in the league.

Cecelia Ulicny made six saves to record the shutout win.

The loss dropped the Spartans to 2-7 and 1-5.

Parkland-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley dropped a 5-0 decision to Parkland in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Elayna Kocher had a pair of first-half goals to help the Trojans remain unbeaten at 12-0-1. The winners also received goals from Emma Hall, Lauren Ervin and Dani Marstellar.

Sadie Rizzo finished with 10 saves for the Bears, who were playing without three starters.

The loss dropped PV to 6-7.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northern Lehigh-Palisades

Northern Lehigh earned its first win of the season, shutting out Colonial League foe Palisades by a 2-0 score.

Ariana Williams put the Bulldogs on the board in the first period, while Ada Porobenski added an insurance tally in the third quarter.

Delaney Szwast assisted on both Nolehi goals. Daisy Richards made four saves as the Bulldogs moved to 1-10 and 1-8.

Crestwood-N’western

Northwestern dropped a 4-1 non-league contest to powerful Crestwood.

Emily Delvecchio and Ava McConnell both scored in the first quarter to give the Comets a lead.

The Tigers, who were outshot by an 18-9 margin, received a second-period tally from Carsyn Van Norman. Northwestern goalie Emma Yanders finished with 13 saves.

The loss drops the Tigers to 8-2-1.

VOLLEYBALL

N’western-Pen Argyl

Northwestern won its third match in a row, earning a 25-9, 25-9, 25-20 sweep of Pen Argyl.

Bailey Murray had 11 kills and two blocks for the Tigers, now 7-6, while Shannon Green finished with 26 assists and six digs. Kylie Nagle added 20 digs and five aces.

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Weatherly fell 25-5, 25-10, 25-23 to Tri-Valley in Schuylkill League action.

Abigail Teodorescu and Kelly Reiner each had seven digs for the Wreckers. Weatherly (1-11) also received four digs and an ace from Taylor Davidovich.

Tri-Valley won the JV game, 2-0.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Pottsville

Jim Thorpe’s Ashlynn Miller and Keira Reese both won singles matches, but the Olympians lost 3-2 to Pottsville.

Miller didn’t drop a game in her straight-set win, while Reese dueled the Tide’s Kyra Sophy before securing her victory.

The loss dropped Thorpe to 4-10.
