Maini’s goal lifts Tribe
It was a wild turn of events in the final two minutes of Thursday night’s field hockey game between Lehighton and Pleasant Valley.
A late goal by the Bears’ Anayah Accilien tied the game with just 1:59 remaining.
But less than a minute after, Lehighton answered back with an Allee Maini goal and the Indians held on for the 2-1 win.
“It was exciting, that’s for sure.” Lehighton head coach Emma Sawyer said. “I’m really glad we came back and won it at the end there. I’m very proud of my girls for coming back in the final minutes after Pleasant Valley had tied the score, and finding a way to come out on top.”
Gabriella Brown scored the first goal of the game for Lehighton with 1:10 left in the second quarter.
Lehighton (8-2) was able to make that goal stand up until the wild finish of the fourth quarter.
Pleasant Valley goalkeeper Maria Altemose was one of the main reasons her team stayed in the game, as she made some incredible saves to prevent the Indians from breaking it open.
Time-and-time again, Lehighton had opportunities to extend the lead, but Altemose allowed the Bears (1-7-2) to stay close.
“She’s done a phenomenal job,” Pleasant Valley head coach Corin Owermohle Owermohle said about Altemose. “I think today was the third penalty stroke she saved this season. She has really good determination and excellent footwork. She played awesome.”
For the Bears, - who recorded their first win of the season against Pocono Mountain West on Tuesday - it was a busy week.
“This is our fourth game in four days this week - and the third night game in that span,” Owermohle said. “Our girls have had a lot of late nights.
“But we are getting better. Our level of play has definitely improved. There are still things we have to fix, but we’re getting there. We are playing hard, and our girls never give up.”
For Lehighton, the victory was its fourth in a row.
“The girls have come out pretty strong in all of our games,” Sawyer said. “I’m very excited for the path we’re going on right now. Hopefully, we can continue it.
“This is my first year as head coach, and I couldn’t be any more proud of my girls.”
TYING GOAL ... Accilien’s goal with 1:59 left came off a mad scramble. “It wasn’t the neatest goal because it was a little bit of a scramble, but she was where she was supposed to be,” Owermohle said about Accilien. “She put the footwork in and made a nice, hard push to the cage which is what we get to try to get them to do.”
GIVING CREDIT TO ALTEMOSE ... Lehighton had plenty of chances to score, but Altemose was able to keep the game close. Lehighton’s Sawyer was impressed. “We had a lot of opportunities, but give their goalie credit,” Sawyer said. “She was fast and incredible. She was really good.”
