More than 60 railroad enthusiasts toured the historic Lehigh and New England Railroad Station in Lansford on Labor Day weekend, in conjunction with the first Tamaqua Railfest.
Visitors came from as far as Connecticut and Virginia to see the last Lehigh and New England passenger station in existence.
The Lansford Historical Society provided a slide show and photographs depicting Lansford’s once booming railroad industry while members Bruce Markovich and Bob Pavlick conducted tours explaining the history of the station building.
The visitors were impressed with how much of the original architecture and details were still intact in the nearly 100-year-old building, Markovich said.
This will be the last time the station will be open until the first phase of the restoration work is complete, said Markovich, who is also president of the Lansford Borough Council.
The borough, which owns the building, recently received a $95,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development to begin a project to restore the station to its original condition, he said.
