Local roundup: Results from Sept. 6

The Northwestern field hockey and Pleasant Valley and Panther Valley volleyball teams all kept their perfect starts to the season alive Wednesday.

Elsewhere, the Lehighton boys and Tamaqua girls cross country teams opened their seasons in impressive fashion, while the Pleasant Valley girls soccer, girls tennis and Tamaqua golf teams also recorded victories.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northwestern-Palmerton

Cara Thomas scored twice and Northwestern stayed unbeaten with a 3-2 win over Palmerton.

Olivia Costa added a goal on an assist from Hannah Gober for the Tigers (4-0).

Makenzie Long scored on an assist from Tessa Sander, who also added a goal for the Blue Bombers (2-3).

VOLLEYBALL

Easton-Pleasant Vy.

Pleasant Valley stayed undefeated with a 25-20, 25-13, 25-12 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Easton.

Brianna Bruckman dished out 28 assists and fired two aces for the Bears (4-0), who have not dropped a set this season. Lexi Womack added 10 kills and 10 digs, while Kara Miller, Rylee Ruggiero and Hannah Akob each had six kills and Alexis Wilkes finished with three aces.

Northwestern-Panther Vy.

Unbeaten Panther Valley posted a 25-19, 25-10, 25-17 non-league win over Northwestern.

Abby Benack had 10 assists and 10 digs for the Panthers (4-0). Natalie Vermillion finished with two aces, seven kills and digs, while Riley McArdle recorded four aces, nine kills and seven digs.

Kylie Nagle had 33 digs for the Tigers (2-2). Norah Silfies added eight kills, and Shannon Green dished out 32 assists.

Panther Valley won the JV contest, 2-1.

CROSS COUNTRY

Tamaqua-Minersville-Pottsville at Blue Mountain

The Tamaqua girls swept their Schuylkill League opener in a meet at Blue Mountain.

The Blue Raiders posted wins over Blue Mountain (20-41), Minersville (24-25) and Pottsville (26-29).

Alexis Buchala (24:33), Isabella Jones (25:18) and Bailey Pliska (25:56) were fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively, for Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders went 2-1 in the boys meet, picking up wins over Blue Mountain (25-30) and Pottsville (20-38) before suffering a narrow loss to Minersville (28-29).

Levi Kunkel placed fifth for the Tamaqua boys in 19:19, while Jesse Gormley (20:04), Anthony Marchetti (20:07) and Stephen Kieffer (20:08) were eighth, ninth and 10th.

Lehighton-Pine Grove-North Schuylkill at Jim Thorpe

Lehighton’s boys posted a sweep in a season-opening Schuylkill League meet at Jim Thorpe.

Elijah Pagotto led the way for the Indians with the overall victory and a time of 17:59, while Owen Serfass and Kyle Kuznicki were second and third, respectively, for the Tribe, who topped Jim Thorpe (23-32), North Schuylkill (17-44) and Pine Grove (19-42).

Gabe Wirth was fourth for the Olympians, while Bowden Chicarelli placed fifth.

Aubrey Bonner won the girls’ meet for Jim Thorpe with a time of 22:25. The Olympians went 2-1, picking up wins over North Schuylkill (17-38) and Lehighton (20-35) but falling to Pine Grove (27-32). Stacy Bos (third) and Lindsay Patton (fifth) both earned top-five finishes for Jim Thorpe, while Julia Smith placed ninth for the Indians, who went 1-2 in the girls meet, picking up a win over North Schuylkill (20-36).

Pleasant Valley swept an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference match with Pocono Mountain West, 6-0.

Brianca Pridham, Carly Rehrig and Ryan Rosenberg swept singles play for the Bears (4-5). The teams of Molly Schaffner and Mariana Barragan, Cecilia Cordova and Shannon Price and Suhayla Doman and Ariana Moscoso were victorious in doubles action for PV.

MMI Prep posted a 5-0 win over Jim Thorpe.

With the victory, the MMI and the Olympians’ (1-5) girls tennis team are 21-21 in their 42 meetings (dating back to 1993).

Aryn Stivala had a hat trick and Pleasant Valley rolled to a 6-0 win over East Stroudsburg South in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play.

Stivala opened the scoring on an assist from Emma Meyers and added her second goal off another Meyers assist after a corner for the Bears (2-4). Stivala’s final score came after she stole the ball and dribbled through three defenders. Riley Green scored directly off a corner, and assisted on Hailey Klein’s goal off a free kick. Meyers added the final score on an assist from Danielle Boland. Sadie Rizzo made one save in the shutout.

No. Schuylkill-Marian

Marlie White recorded a hat trick and North Schuylkill pulled away for an 8-0 Schuylkill League win over Marian.

White scored twice in the second half for the Spartans (2-2), who found the back of the net six times after the intermission. Mya Conti also added a pair of goals in the win, while Alexa Fletcher, Taylor Shadle and Julisa River also each scored once.

Maddie Kattner made 20 saves for the Fillies (0-4).

GOLF

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Peter McGinley shot a match-best 74 to lead Tamaqua to a 340-416 Schuylkill League victory over Jim Thorpe.

Noah Steigerwalt and Blaise Gigli carded an 84 and 88 for the Blue Raiders (3-8), who have won two in a row.

Aiden Ramey led the Olympians (0-9) with an 86.

Panther Valley-Shenandoah

Panther Valley scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to rally from a 20-point deficit and earn a 28-26 comeback win.

Trailing 26-6, Chase McArdle threw scoring passes of 47 yards to Cy Maynard and 60 yards to Carson Jones before reaching the end zone on a 6-yard run to tie the game. Bekim Mehmeti’s two-point conversion gave PV the lead.

Mehmeti also added a 62-yard TD run, while Tyler Hall recovered a fumble to set up a scoring drive. Hall also came through with a game-ending sack.
