Lehighton Pre-K Counts has openings for this year

Lehighton Area School District’s Pre-K Counts program is gearing up for the 2023-24 school year with a rare opportunity for families still thinking about registration.

Elementary Center Principal Aaron Sebelin said several openings remain in both the morning and afternoon programs, which start Sept. 7.

“It is a great program, and I hope if there are any families who feel they might be eligible that they will register,” Sebelin said. “Typically we are full at this point.”

A $200,000 grant awarded by the Pennsylvania Office of Child Development and Early Learning allows the district to run a program with up to 20 students in the morning and 20 in the afternoon.

District officials said the program is designed to provide a strong foundation for young learners featuring a comprehensive curriculum encompassing a wide range of subjects. The educational experience includes essential early literacy skills, such as letters, colors, and rhyming to pre-math concepts like numbers, shape sorting, and counting. Students also have the chance to explore music, art, science, and self-esteem.

Assistant to the superintendent Mary Figura said grant funds will be allocated toward crucial aspects of the program.

“These include teacher salaries and training, essential supplies, transportation for field trips, orientation, and parent engagement activities,” she said.

The program is open to children aged 3 and 4 by Sept. 1st of the current school year, provided their families qualify based on federal income guidelines. It comes at no cost to eligible families.

An orientation for the Pre-K Counts program has been scheduled from 9:15 to 10:15 a.m. and noon to 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 5.

“We would welcome anyone considering the program to come in and check us out,” Sebelin said.
