Improved visibility at all crosswalks surrounding its highly-utilized park is forthcoming in Palmerton.
Borough council unanimously agreed on Thursday to a crosswalk lighting proposal submitted by the Palmerton Festival Board.
Susie Arner, president of the Palmerton Community Festival, stated the group’s intentions in a letter submitted to council last month.
In the letter, Arner stated that at a recent meeting of the Palmerton Festival board of directors, they discussed safety for patrons and guests of the festival, along with other functions in the park.
“We have noticed that crosswalks are not extremely bright,” Arner said. “Visibility of folks crossing the streets is rather low.”
Because of that, Arner stated that the festival board would offer the borough no more than $5,000 to purchase the light standards that would place LED lights at all crosswalks surrounding the park.
Also, she said that if that amount makes it financially permissible, the festival board would like to request the nonworking light across from the bandstand be repaired.
The 34th annual Palmerton Community Festival is scheduled to be held Sept. 8-10 in the borough park.
