Marine Corps group gives donations to nonprofits

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League Detachment 626 distributed checks/donations to several nonprofit organizations Wednesday morning at the American Legion Post 314 in Lehighton.

Donations were given to veterans for suicide awareness ($1,250), to veterans for veterans assistance ($1,250), Valor Clinic ($500), and $700 total to Trees for Troops and Wreaths Across America.

Jim Laub, commandant Detachment 626, said the donations were the result of $3,700 raised during the organization’s inaugural golf tournament in May at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton.

“It benefits all the organizations, and is about helping veterans,” Laub said. “Hopefully, we’ll get to do this again.”

Mike Meining, Veteran Outreach Coordinator, Valor Clinic, said the local veterans organization has continued to help out veterans in the community.

“It’s going to go a long way to homeless and in-need veterans,” Meining said. ”Every little bit goes a long way in helping us with our efforts.”

Christine LeClair, director of the Carbon County Veterans Affairs Office, said that Carbon County has the highest veterans suicide rate in the state.

“We do a lot of events each month,” LeClair said. “We want to promote connectedness, and this donation will certainly help us do that.”

The Schuylkill-Carbon Marine Corps League is a veterans organization founded to continue the traditions and spirit of all Marines who proudly wear, or have worn the eagle, globe, and anchor of the Corps.
