Music, movies lead regional events

Jeffrey Gaines, Harrisburg-born folk rocker, leads a host of entertainment attractions coming to local and regional venues over the next couple of weeks.
The singer-songwriter, who scored a hit with his cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” will perform at Mauch Chunk Opera House. The latter will also host shows by blues trio GA-20 and several tribute acts.
Over at The Mahoning Drive-In Theater, themed events include Video Game Weekend, Shot Out of a Cannon and The Wild World of David Lynch II.

• The Bangos, 8 p.m. Aug. 4. The all-female band, based in New York City, performs the music of the Bangles and Go-Go’s.
• Mullet, 8 p.m. Aug. 5. Based in Connecticut, the group pays tribute to 1980s hair bands.
• The Doobie Others, 8 p.m. Aug. 11. Hailing from Long Island, New York, the band performs the music of the Doobie Brothers.
• Laurel Canyon, 8 p.m. Aug. 12. The act performs an acoustic tribute to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, including songs from members’ early bands and solo material.
• Jeffrey Gaines, 8 p.m. Aug. 17. Born in Harrisburg, the singer-songwriter/guitarist released his first of eight albums in 1992. In 2001, Gaines’ cover of Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes” reached No. 22 on Billboard’s Adult Top 40 chart. The musician, who released his latest album, “Alright,” in 2018, has toured with acts such as Tracy Chapman and Tom Petty.
• Adrenalize, 8 p.m. Aug. 18. The band, which performs the music of Def Leppard, takes its name from Def Leppard’s same-titled 1992 studio album.
• GA-20, 7:30 p.m. Aug. 24. The blues trio, formed in 2018 in Boston, features Matt Stubbs, Pat Faherty and Tim Carman. GA-20 released its third album, “Crackdown,” in 2022.

• Jack Gruber Trio, 7 p.m. Aug. 4. Born in Washington, D.C., the pianist, pursuing a master’s degree at the Manhattan School of Music, attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York City. Gruber’s trio also features Ruben Coca and Dan Martinez.
• Josh Lawrence, 7 p.m. Aug. 11. Lawrence - a trumpeter, composer, bandleader and recording artist - serves as director of jazz studies at Michigan’s Interlochen Center for the Arts. He has played on Boyz II Men, Erykah Badu and Jazmine Sullivan albums. Lawrence studied at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Juilliard School in New York.
• As Is, 7 p.m. Aug. 18. The duo/couple, guitarist Alan Schulman and vocalist Stacey Lynn Schulman, performs 20th-century classics. Based in New York City, As Is released debut album “A Love Like Ours” in 2015 and sophomore set “Here’s to Life” in 2018.

• Video Game Weekend, 3 p.m. Aug. 5 and 6. The event will include a gaming market, a screening of 1993’s “Super Mario Brothers” and a live tournament. “Super Mario Brothers” stars Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo as Mario and Luigi, respectively.
• Shot Out of a Cannon, 6 p.m. Aug. 12. Exhumed Films and the theater will present films from the 1980s Golan-Globus Cannon Films library. Austin Trunick, author of “The Cannon Film Guide,” will appear. The lineup consists of 1985’s “American Ninja,” 1987’s “Masters of the Universe,” 1984’s “Breakin,’” and 1989’s “Kinjite: Forbidden Subjects.”
• Beach Party, 6 p.m. Aug. 13. The theater will screen 1965’s “Beach Blanket Bingo,” starring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. Other event highlights include music by surf-rock act Sun Bus, a ’60s-style dance contest, DJ Cy Rush and a sandy-beach photo op.
• Community Night, 6 p.m. Aug. 17. The theater will host a screening of 2003’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl,” starring Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. The event will feature a DJ, themed eats and, courtesy of The Salty Sea Circus, pirates, mermaids, circus performers, swordsmen and more.
• The Wild World of David Lynch II, 6 p.m. Aug. 18 and 19. The lineup of David Lynch films features 1999’s “The Straight Story,” 2006’s “Inland Empire,” 1997’s “Lost Highway” and 1992’s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me.” “Twin Peaks” cast members Ray Wise, Dana Ashbrook and Harry Goaz will attend the event.

• Kids Weekend, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 12 and 13. The event will include rides, laser tag, a petting-zoo food cup, “Paw Patrol” characters, a pirate-ship play area and pony rides.

• Seth Meyers, 7 p.m. Aug. 11. The comedian, Emmy Award-winning writer and host of “Late Night with Seth Meyers” since 2014, was previously a “Saturday Night Live” cast member and writer. Meyers’ first Netflix stand-up special, “Lobby Baby,” debuted in 2019.
• Collective Soul, 8 p.m. Aug. 17. The rock band, formed in Stockbridge, Georgia, released its debut studio album in 1993, with its 11th and most recent set, “Vibrating,” out in 2022. The band’s hit singles include “Shine,” “December” and “The World I Know.” Collective Soul’s lineup features, among others, Ed Roland, Dean Roland and Will Turpin.
• Theresa Caputo, 8 p.m. Aug. 19 and 3 p.m. Aug. 20. Born in Hicksville, New York, the self-professed medium claims she has the ability to communicate with the deceased. Caputo starred in the TLC show “Long Island Medium” from 2011 to 2019.

• Justin Willman, 8 p.m. Aug. 12. A magician, comedian and TV personality, Willman created and stars in the Netflix series “Magic For Humans.” Born in St. Louis, he has hosted programs such as Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars” and Netflix’s “Baking Impossible.”
• Prog Rock Tribute Night, 8 p.m. Aug. 18. The evening will feature performances by Total Mass Retain and Know Return, who perform the music of Yes and Kansas, respectively.
• YYNOT, 8 p.m. Aug. 19. Tim Starace and Billy Alexander started the group, with origins in Florida and California, in 2015. YYNOT, which performs original progressive rock and vintage Rush covers, has released albums such as “Hourglass” and “Light and Shade.”
• Black Flag, 7 p.m. Aug. 20. Formed in 1976 in Hermosa Beach, California, the punk band’s lineup includes original member Greg Ginn and skateboarder Mike Vallely. Black Flag released its seventh and most recent studio album “What The …” in 2013.

• En Vogue, 8 p.m. Aug. 5, Event Center. Formed in Oakland, California, En Vogue released its debut album “Born to Sing” - featuring the hit “Hold On”- in 1990. Other hits include “My Lovin’ (You‘re Never Gonna Get It),” “Free Your Mind” and “Whatta Man,” the latter with Salt-N-Pepa. En Vogue’s current lineup features Terry Ellis, Cindy Herron and Rhona Bennett. The act released “Electric Café,” its seventh studio album, in 2018.
