PITTSBURGH (AP) - A pair of bald eagles in western Pennsylvania have abandoned their nest following the loss of their second egg.

The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/1xnmO0s ) reports that one of the birds discarded a portion of egg early Friday at the nest in Pittsburgh's Hays neighborhood.

Local biologists and eagle cam watchers looked for an eaglet, but the birds stopped sitting on the nest that evening and left.

The Audubon Society of western Pennsylvania reports that the birds continue to make brief visits, but have abandoned nesting for this season. But officials expect them back next year.

Last year, the birds successfully raised three young from as many eggs. They have been in Pittsburgh for three years and are the first eagles to nest in the city in 150 years.
