Local naturalist Joe Lankalis uses a strong magnet to determine if a mysterious rock located behind the Dutch Hill baseball field in Tamaqua has any magnetic properties. Some area residents were under the impression it was the remains of a meteorite. "This very heavy, dense rock is similar to sudo fossil and possible pyrite concretion commonly located in shale pockets," said Lankalis, who served 32 years as a high school science teacher and nature enthusiast. "This non-magentic rock is about 300 million years old, but definitely not a meteorite."
