Lehighton club to collect winter clothing for the less fortunate

Lehighton Area High School students are asking the community to donate winter clothing for the less fortunate.

Members of the school's Family, Career and Community Leaders of America club have planned an event this week to collect warm clothing on behalf of Family Promise of Carbon County. On Friday, between 2:30-6 p.m., they will be accepting lightly used winter coats, sweaters, hats and gloves in the foyer of the school's main entrance. The group also needs backpacks and other durable bags - so the person who benefits has something to carry their clothing in.As the summer comes to a close, Family Promise needs clothing to distribute to the families it serves. The club's adviser said her students chose Family Promise because the local nonprofit is also being highlighted at the Lehighton volleyball team's "Match with a meaning," which was scheduled to take place Tuesday night."We are trying to get them winter clothing for the people who come into Family Promise to use their services," Julie McHugh said. "People who are down on their luck, don't have a place to stay or money coming in."FCCLA is an organization that encourages community service and leadership among high school students. At Lehighton, there are about 20 active members in the group. In the past they have helped area food banks, nursing homes and animal shelters, among other organizations."There is a focus on leadership; how to be a good, responsible leader; how to be a part of your community," McHugh said. After Friday's clothing collection is complete, Family Promise will come and pick up the clothing. From there, it will be distributed to families who use the program."They help the community, and that's basically what our group does, make the community a nicer place to live in," McHugh said.
