The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation shut down a 3-mile section of Interstate 80 west in Carbon County for several hours Friday morning to clean up a load dumped when a tractor-trailer jackknifed Wednesday.
At 9 a.m., crews began shutting down Interstate 80 westbound between Exit 277 (Lake Harmony) and Exit 274 (Hickory Run) for the cleanup. Eastbound lanes were not affected.The operation, involving a heavy-duty crane, was expected to take seven hours.Westbound traffic was detoured at the Lake Harmony exit to Route 940 west to Route 534. Traffic was allowed back on the highway at the Hickory Run exit.State police said the load broke free during a crash that occurred around 3:30 p.m. at mile marker 275.2.A tractor-trailer reportedly jackknifed while rounding a right-hand curve. No one was injured in the crash, however both lanes of I-80 west were blocked.The driver, 48-year-old Kelvin T. Jones of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, was cited for failing to drive at a safe speed.
