65 guinea pigs taken from home; woman trying to run rescue

LITITZ, Pa. (AP) — Officials say 65 guinea pigs, 10 rabbits and a dog were removed from a filthy Pennsylvania apartment where the occupant was trying to run a guinea pig rescue.

The Lancaster County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says a maintenance man who visited the Lititz apartment to change an air filter discovered the animals Thursday.A woman, who has not been identified, and her 5-year-old son were living there.SPCA officials say the animals had no food or water and some had been feeding off three dead animals. Many were living in cages with inches of feces. The rest were free in the apartment.Authorities say they are considering charges and that the apartment will be condemned.
