Lehighton man sentenced to special prison program

A Lehighton man, who previously pleaded guilty in six criminal cases, was sentenced this week to a special state prison program.

Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Zachiry D. Kerschner, 21, to serve two years in the state Intermediate Punishment Program.Kerschner had entered pleas to two counts each of driving under the influence of a controlled substance, criminal trespass, theft, possession of drug paraphernalia, criminal mischief and one count of receiving stolen property.He was charged by Mahoning Township and state police at Lehighton for incidents dating back to 2013 and into 2015. He was charged with entering homes in the township, stealing drugs and removing items and then selling them to feed a drug habit.Several of the counts he pleaded to were felonies.The state IPP runs for about two years with about half of it spent in a state prison, the remainder in an intensive inpatient drug rehabilitation program and finally at a halfway house. However, if he fails to complete it, Kerschner would be brought back before Serfass for resentencing.Serfass also ordered Kerschner to make restitution to various victims totaling $2,199.67. On the DUI counts he was fined a total of $4,000 with two years of license suspensions, and to pay court costs of about $1,000,Kerschner is entitled to credit for time served, but Serfass ruled the state corrections department will determine what he is entitled to.
