Mahoning supervisors discuss road repairs

The Mahoning Township Board of Supervisors focused on road repair during the monthly meeting Wednesday night.

Discussion began with voting on part-time road crew members to be used more often in the township. The motion passed to allow part-timers to be called in with the approval of the two road committee members or supervisors in committee members' absence. Work hours are not to exceed 30 per week. The board turned its attention to the aftermath of winter storm Jonas and recent downpour that left several roads under water.Supervisor Bruce Steigerwalt said damage was sustained to Troxell and Gilberts Hill roads along with Semmels Hill and Spring Hill roads."We don't have enough cross pipes," Steigerwalt said."If the top pipe gets blocked, water runs down the west side. There was a gully created," he said of Troxell Road.Steigerwalt suggested contacting the township engineer to come up with new ideas for a more "maintenance-free" solution."We spend a lot of time to redo shoulders for hills. If we could do something to fix them, there will be less cleanup later," he said. "I'd like to get an idea of what other places."The township will take a road inventory to survey the surrounding areas for future repairs."I'd like to put out a bid for paving projects to finish Troxell Hill. Spring Hill Road looks pretty bad. Our machine couldn't do all of the work. We should have some of these hills where we can't do the work go out to bid," Steigerwalt told the board."Beaver Run needs patching and we need more grading on shoulders," he said.Vice Chairman Franklin Ruch told Steigerwalt to go ahead and schedule the road inspection as soon possible.
