A troubled Schuylkill County hospital, closed by the state in April, is on the auction block.

St. Catherine's Medical Center, Fountain Springs, Ashland, will be put up for sale by order of U.S. Bankruptcy Court. The three-day auction will be held by Houser Auctioneers beginning at 9 a.m. Oct. 13, Oct. 15 and Nov. 9 at the hospital at 101 Broad Street.Featured items include hospital equipment, furniture, office/business items, stainless steel kitchen and cafeteria equipment, electrical, plumbing and maintenance items, a zero-turn Gravely motor, a 250 Ford pickup, a 1989 Chevy dump truck with a cinder spreader, generators, and at least 10 tons of coal and other items.Details can be seen at

Terms include full payment, cash, pre-approved check or bank letter of purchase approval. Additional terms will be announced on the day of the auction. There will be no buyers premium.All buyers of hospital equipment will be signing a waiver created by the bankruptcy trustee. This waiver declares the medical equipment is being sold as is/where is and may have been used to examine/process/dispose of hazardous material. It is the responsibility of the buyer to take proper precautions for the removal and shipment of all equipment.The 129-year-old hospital, said to be one of the oldest in the state, was $5.8 million in debt, with only $45,000 in cash available. There wasn't enough money to provide care or pay workers.The state Department of Health revoked the 67-bed hospital's license in March, saying the problems posed a threat to patients' health and safety. About 150 people lost their jobs.
