In the early 1900s, Joshua Lionel Cowen designed the Electric Express, a model train. His intention was to provide an eye-catching display for toy stores. The display was so popular that by 1906, Lionel Manufacturing Co. had been founded near City Hall in New York City, and the company was making a selection of engines, cars and track sections.
