Tamaqua resident chosen as fellow

Caroline Kanaskie of Tamaqua, a Dickinson College senior, has been selected as a Baird Sustainability Fellow for advancing sustainability goals on or beyond the Dickinson campus through excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. Kanaskie is majoring in environmental science and minoring in biology with a focus on biogeochemistry.

Kanaskie is one of 11 students selected for the prestigious program. Students must reach specific criteria, which includes high academic achievement, attainment of advanced-level sustainability competencies and dispositions through academic work and practice, and evidence of a service project of exceptional impact on related sustainability. The Baird Fellowship Program is named in honor of Spencer Fullerton Baird who is regarded as one of the nation's leading naturalists of the 19th century.Kanaskie has studied at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She has also traveled to Copenhagen, Denmark, to study glaciology. Kanaskie has interned at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Environmental Protection Agency's Atlantic Ecology Division.
