Whether or not Northern Lehigh High School seniors will graduate outdoors next month hinges on a project to renovate the track around Bulldog Stadium.
Superintendent Michael Michaels said at Monday’s school board meeting that graduation is currently scheduled to be held at 7 p.m. June 9 in the stadium. However, Michaels said that’s dependent upon construction and the weather.“We want to do it in the stadium,” Michaels said. “We want to make graduation great for them.”Greg Derr, director of support services and transportation, said construction on the project is tentatively scheduled to begin on Thursday.Derr said the project is expected to take between six to eight weeks to complete, but added the contractors are willing to work with the district. He said the project was put on hold last year due to the uncertainties with the state budget. In October 2015, the board on an 8-0 vote, authorized administration to contract with ELA Sport for $699,000, plus soft costs, for the stadium track resurfacing project. As part of the project, the entire surface of the track will be milled down and a new asphalt track will be installed with perimeter drainage. Then crews will overlay the pavement with a new black mat with a urethane surfacing system. The material is impervious. The pole vault runway, long jump runway, and high jump area will receive the same track surface. The project comes with a life expectancy of 15-20 years.
