Man jailed after Weatherly standoff

A Weatherly man remains in jail after an hours-long standoff in a borough home Saturday afternoon during which he held family members at gunpoint, borough police said.

James J. Roof, 53, was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and terroristic threats and jailed in the Carbon County Correctional Facility without bail following his peaceful surrender.

The incident began with a welfare check at 118 E. Main St. around 11:30 a.m. during which Roof became hostile with officers who came to the door and asked them to leave, police said.

About an hour later, family members attempted to talk to him and he threatened to shoot them, police said. The family members were able to escape the home, and Roof remained barricaded inside with a gun, police said.

All of Weatherly’s police officers were called into service and state police assisted with setting up a perimeter. A borough officer tried to talk to Roof and convince him to come out for hours.

At 1:30 p.m., Weatherly Sgt. Michael Bogart took command and called in the state police’s Special Emergency Response Team, which took over operations, police said. A state police negotiator convinced Roof to surrender, police said.

Roof came out of the house unarmed around 4 p.m., police said. State police took Roof into custody, and turned him over to borough police for processing and arraignment.

Borough police then executed a search warrant at the house, finding a 9mm handgun inside the front door, and semi-automatic pump, pistol-grip 12-gauge shotgun along with several thousand rounds of ammunition.

According to arrest papers, Roof screamed at his girlfriend, pointed a gun at her, and threatened to kill her. She escaped the home. Roof followed her outside and she fled in a vehicle, court papers said. He then locked himself inside and refused to come out for police, arrest papers said.

“The Weatherly Police Department is committed to the safety of all our residents and guests. We are proud of our officers as this incident was resolved without injury. We would like to thank the Pennsylvania State Police for their cooperation and assistant,” police said in a statement Saturday.

A peaceful surrender with no injuries was the best outcome for all involved, Bogart said, and he understands this incident, along a main artery in town, was an inconvenience for residents.

Several streets in the area were closed during the standoff at the East Main Street home, which is near the Schwab School and the U.S. Post Office. Nearest cross streets are Spring and Carbon streets.
