SPCA seeks homes for dogs rescued in Monroe County

After the July 14 rescue of more than 170 dogs from a property in Effort by the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Animal Law Enforcement team, the organization is urgently seeking adoptive homes.

In an effort to help find homes, the Pennsylvania SPCA’s Philadelphia headquarters, along with Danville and Lancaster centers and Main Line Animal Rescue sites, will set adoption fees at $10 for all dogs more than a year old on Friday and Sunday.

With the shelters already at capacity, the recent rescue in Monroe County put the dog population at a critical level, according to the Pennsylvania SPCA.

The majority of rescued dogs were Jack Russell terrier mix types. While some have been adopted, many remain. The vast majority are small, dog-friendly dogs that would benefit from living with other canine friends, according to the Pennsylvania SPCA.

The adoption event is geared toward those who have been waiting for the right time to adopt or to add another dog to their pack. On the fee-reduced adoption days, all normal adoption processes and policies will be followed.

The PSPCA’s team was called to the Effort property by the Pennsylvania Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement after a resident in the home passed away.

The coroner’s office responded and found dogs and puppies, along with two chickens, two peacocks, 12 cats, two guinea pigs, one dove, three finches, one parakeet and four rabbits.

The investigation into animal cruelty and neglect continues because of observed unsanitary living conditions, possible lack of veterinary care and the number of animals.
