A tractor trailer crash at 12:32 p.m. Wednesday on the on-ramp of Route 22 from Route 378 in Bethlehem injured the driver and resulted in leaking batteries being dumped onto the ground.
State police at the Bethlehem barracks said Joshua A. Jorge Burgos, 29, of Allentown, was “pushed out” the front window of the tractor and transported by personnel from the City of Bethlehem EMS to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Fountain Hill. Police said the extent of the seriousness of his injuries is unknown. They said he sustained lacerations throughout his body.
Police said he was driving a 2019 Freightliner Cascadia on the Route 22 eastbound on-ramp when he failed to negotiate a right curve in the ramp due to the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. They said the rig traveled onto the grassy median before rolling onto its driver’s side.
Police said some of the batteries that fell to the ground were leaking toxic fumes, The Rapid Response Hazmat team and firefighters from the City of Bethlehem Fire Department responded. Police said the responders neutralized the batteries, allowing A-1 Towing to remove the cargo safely and tow the vehicle from the scene.
Police said Burgos was cited for failure to drive at a safe speed.
