Scout’s project honors late great-grandfather

For his Eagle Scout project, Wyatt Smith of Lehighton decided to honor the memory of his late great-grandfather, Orville J. Wehr.

Smith, 15, of Boy Scout Troop 755 in Clamtown, built raised flower boxes for the residents of Greenwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hometown, Rush Township.

Wehr was a resident of the center from 2006 to 2013, and Smith spent many hours visiting him there.

“The intent of the project is to give residents the opportunity to go outside and plant and care for flowers during the growing season,” said Blake Tharp, the Troop’s treasurer.

Smith, a junior studying precision machining at Carbon Career & Technical Institute, cut and engraved a dedication plaque in memory of Wehr.

Smith built the boxes in February with the help of Scouts Cole Knox and Seth Whitehead.

In April, family members and six fellow Scouts helped unload and fill the boxes.

He is the son of Jeremy and Vanessa Smith.
