The Lansford Borough Council last night soundly rejected a request to sell three acres of its recreational area in the vicinity of the municipal swimming pool to a private developer for a new Rite Aid superstore.

The vote was 5-1 to reject a $1-million offer for the land. Against the sale were Robert Gaughan, Dwight Penberth, Richard Giantesano, Charlie Repinec and Margaret Horowski. Council President Joseph Genits voted no on the motion. George Dennis abstained from voting.

In presenting the company’s offer, Tom Stonebrook, the developer, said the new store would be built almost across the street from the Boyer’s supermarket at a cost of about $3.1-million, and would bring in an estimated $75,653 every year in tax revenue.
