Funds have been set up for a family who lost everything in a fast-moving fire that destroyed their home in Nesquehoning on Friday.
Panther Valley Elementary School posted on its Facebook page over the weekend that it is collecting gift cards for the McLaughlin family.
“As many have heard there was house fire in Nesquehoning last week,” the post said. “The home belonged to one of our special education teachers, Mrs. (Marta) McLaughlin. Currently, her and her family are staying at hotels until new housing can be secured.”
The school is accepting gift cards to Redners, Walmart, Dollar General, gas cards, prepaid cash gift cards between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. this week.
In addition, a GoFundMe has also been set up for the McLaughlin family as they attempt to rebuild their lives.
It says that the family of six only has the clothes on their backs and their animals are being cared for by others until they can get back on their feet. Donations could be made at https://www.gofundme.com/f/marta-and-howie-house-fire.
The fire happened just after noon on Friday following an electrical issue, Nesquehoning Hose Company Fire Chief John McArdle said.
The response was delayed as a result of a thunderstorm that was moving through the area at that time.
When crews arrived, flames and smoke were observed coming from the house and moved quickly through the structure.
Several animals were rescued from the structure.
