Former Lehighton teacher pleads in texting case

A former Lehighton High School teacher pleaded guilty in Carbon County court on Tuesday to one count of corruption of minors and was immediately sentenced to a probation term.

Matthew Kyle Fisher, 31, of Lehighton, admitted to Judge Joseph J. Matika that he sent text messages to a then 16-year-old male that were sexual in nature. Fisher, who was also an adviser to the National Honor Society at the time, resigned his position with the school district after he was arrested.Fisher was charged on Aug. 21 by trooper Nicolas De La Iglesia of the Lehighton barracks of the state police. The affidavit charges that Fisher became involved in a friendship with the student and between July 28 and Aug. 5, 2014, they communicated through multiple text messages. On two separate occasions, Fisher sent the teen inappropriate sexual messages. The matter was first reported to Sergeant Joseph Lawrence of the Lehighton Police Department, who turned the matter over to state police.Yesterday Fisher told Matika, "I take ownership for this. I'm trying to move on with my life."He also said he has surrendered his teaching certificate to the Pennsylvania Department of Education.Matika said although the crime is a serious one, he must take into consideration the facts of the case.He placed Fisher on probation for two years and ordered he render 100 hours of community service, get a mental health evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, pay court costs of about $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation, and have no contact with the victim or his family.
