Runners race through Jim Thorpe to benefit church

The rain held off, overall, for the 17th Race Street Run, hosted by St. Mark’s/St. John’s Episcopal Church, Race Street, Jim Thorpe, on Saturday.

“We have a four-mile run and a 15K (9.32 miles) run,” Angela O’Hara, race director, said. “They will utilize the entire historic district of Jim Thorpe and also the Switchback Rail trail.”

Jordan Remmel, 18, won the 15K in 1:00:09, and Jeannie Bujdos, 30, won the women’s race in 1:06:31.

Ronnie Michlena, 39, won the four-mile race in 27:39, and Anna Keer, 13, won the women’s race in 33:31.

There were 67 runners combined in the two races. The 15K started at 8:30 a.m. in front of the courthouse on Broadway; the 4-mile race began at 8:45. The 4 mile runners ran on Broadway, West Broadway and a portion of the Switchback Trail, turning around and retracing their steps before coming to the borough water treatment plant. The 15K runners continued on the Switchback Trail to the Mauch Chunk Lake entrance where they turned around and retraced their steps back to town. Both races turned onto Race Street at the Opera House and finished in front of the Church.

“The race benefits the St Mark’s Restoration Fund,” O’Hara said. “We have a big church and it’s an old church, so it always needs upkeep in some corner.”

The Race Street run is a revival of a dual-event road race once put on by the Switchback Roadrunners club. The run was last done by the club in the mid-1990s. St. Mark’s Church took over the race in 2006 to serve as a fundraising event for the church.

St. Mark’s and St. John’s Episcopal Church is a combined parish in Jim Thorpe. The building, located at 21 Race Street in Jim Thorpe, is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. For more information on the church and parish, visit St. Mark’s Home Page at www.stmarkandjohn.org/.
