Coaldale council tackles parked car issue

Coaldale council asked that something be done about vehicles sitting on borough streets for months.

“There are people here in town that have these little ‘garage businesses.’ They’re parking their vehicles all over Coaldale, and they are sitting there,” Councilwoman Claire Remington said.

Some of the vehicles are on the backs of flatbed trucks - and one individual, she said, has about five cars parked along Route 209, which passes through the borough.

“You’ll see a Jersey plate on it. Right now there are Florida plates,” she said. “What can we do with the street ordinance and all these cars? These people think they can do whatever.”

“It’s everywhere,” Council President Angela Krapf agreed. “They are all over the streets.”

“Hopefully we can have someone start hammering all these cars. This is absurd,” Remington said.

Solicitor Robert Yurchak said that any vehicle without current registration or inspection is not allowed on streets.

He asked council to get a list of the properties where vehicles are illegally parked.

“I will send them a letter and tell them that this is the ordinance and that it will be enforced commencing on such-and-such a date unless it is cleaned up,” Yurchak said.

During Tuesday’s council meeting, members also heard complaints from a resident who said a multitude of stray cats are roaming the borough.

She reported that about 40 cats live at a neighbor’s property. While some of the cats are spayed or neutered, she noted that many are not.

She was advised that the borough can loan out traps to catch and relocate the felines.
