Bowmanstown fills vacant council seat
This time around, there was no controversy about an open seat on Bowmanstown Borough Council.
One week after council deadlocked on the appointment of a new member, the choice was rather evident on Tuesday when council touted Rob Sikorsky to fill the vacancy.
Of the six members on council, all but one voted for Sikorsky to join them.
Sikorsky’s appointment took place as part of a vacancy board hearing that was called to order by vacancy board chairwoman Tonya Smale.
Nominations were taken, with Councilman Rob Moyer nominating Sikorsky, while Councilman Darren Thomas nominated Kristy Spairana.
Sikorsky, Spairana, Norman Engle Jr., Ronald Gantz, and Rachel Melendez applied for the open seat. Only Sikorsky and Gantz were present on Tuesday.
Councilman William Ravert asked Sikorsky and Gantz the same question: If they were appointed to the open seat, what would be their personal plan?
Sikorsky said he would do the best for the borough with the limited money it has.
“We have to do the best we can with the budget we have,” Sikorsky said.
Gantz said he would “look to add perspective from the family side (of things).”
All but Thomas, who voted for Spairana, voted for Sikorsky.
Sikorsky was sworn in by borough Mayor Zach Snyder.
Last week, council met with the candidates, four of whom were on hand.
At that time council, which only had four members present, took nominations to fill the open seat.
Moyer supported Sikorsky, while Thomas backed Spairana.
Voting in favor of Sikorsky were Moyer and Councilwoman Kara Scott.
In support of Spairana were Thomas and council President Pam Leiby.
Council members William Ravert and Candace Rodrigues were absent from last week’s meeting.
Borough solicitor Lisa Pereira said at that time that since Mayor Zach Snyder wasn’t in attendance, that meant council couldn’t break the tie. As a result, Pereira said council would have to postpone the appointment of a new council member, and would need to call a meeting and have Smale in attendance.
