Lansford again discusses dilapidated buildings

Lansford Borough Council continues to deal with some deteriorating properties, even as it moves forward with others.

Resident Bob Silver again brought the former Silver Furniture building in the Ridge Street business district to the attention of council.

This time he presented photographs of the collapsing roof taken with a drone, showing holes in the roof, a roof collapse and a three-story section next to the collapse leaning.

“This building is going to collapse into itself,” Silver said. “And I don’t mean in a decade. The building is in imminent danger of collapse.”

The building is condemned. Silver thanked council for that move, and said that moving forward, he would share his knowledge of the building that once belonged in his family to help address problems.

Councilwoman Jennifer Staines said she was inside the building, and the condition is very bad with gaps in the floors and ceilings.

The borough did get a $77,000 judgment against the owner of 151 W. Ridge St., another property in danger of collapse, Solicitor Robert Yurchak said.

The home, which is a half of a double, was damaged by fire in the 1990s and the five-story structure is buckling. The borough was forced to close a portion of West Snyder Avenue near Klocks Hill Road, because of the condition of the home back in February.

Both sides of the double home, 151 and 151½ W. Ridge St., would have to come down, borough officials have said, as the sound side of the home wouldn’t be able to stand on its own.

The $77,000 judgment against the owner, Eric Wenzleberger, would be the cost to tear down that half of the structure, Yurchak said.

“If it falls down in the meantime, the $77,000 judgment stands. If the borough has to take it down for safety reasons, the judgment still stands,” Yurchak said. “If he tears it down, then he tears it down. So, it’s up to him to do something at this point.”

The borough is seeking Community Development Block Grant funding to tear down the entire structure.

Yurchak also reported the borough had a hearing with another property owner, Sher Khan, regarding code violations. Judge Casimir Kosciolek issued fines close to $10,000 for violations at 101 E. Snyder Ave. and 242 E. Kline St., he said.

“I think that’s a pretty good result for the borough,” Yurchak said.

There was also discussion regarding 118 W. Ridge St., which was condemned. The owners told council that they were working on bringing the property back, while paperwork states the borough wants it demolished.

Council President Bruce Markovich asked the owners to talk to the borough code enforcement officer.

Mayor Hugh Vrablic said the police would be out enforcing Quality of Life issues, such as garbage, high weeds or grass, junk vehicles and the placement of indoor furniture and appliances outside starting May 15.

“The purpose is to help clean up the town for spring cleaning,” the mayor said.

A link to the Quality of Life Ordinance is posted on the Lansford Police Department’s Facebook page. Vrablic said residents are welcome to file any complaints.

A drone photo shows the roof of the former Silver Furniture store building at 18 E. Ridge St., which has been condemned. To the right, a portion of the roof has collapsed into the first floor and a three-story section is leaning. Holes can also be seen in other areas of the roof. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO
