Lehighton votes against sludge use as fertilizer

Lehighton has adopted a resolution to oppose the use of treated sewage sludge as fertilizer for landscaping or agriculture.

Borough council earlier this month approved the resolution on a 4-2 vote. Council members Ryan Saunders, Lisa Perry, Donnie Rehrig and council President Grant Hunsicker were in favor, with Autumn Abelovsky and Becky Worthy opposed.

Councilman Darryl Arner was absent.

Save Carbon County is opposed to using sewage sludge as fertilizer for landscaping or agriculture, and has approached various municipalities about the subject.

The group has asked municipalities to adopt a resolution that would support better regulations of the sludge.

Various municipalities throughout the county have passed resolutions to date.
