Maynard, Sevrain named to Girls Basketball All-State team

Two Times News area athletes who had extraordinary basketball campaigns this season were honored today with selections to the 2023 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Girls’ Basketball Team. Panther Valley’s Maddison Maynard was honored with a second team nod in class 2A, while Northwestern’s Paige Sevrain was chosen to the third team in class 4A.

Maynard, a Times News first team all-star selection this season, and the Panthers newest 1,000-point scorer was an absolute scoring dynamo for PV. Maynard led the Schuylkill League in scoring, averaging 22.6 points per game, scoring 20 or more points in 16 games and 30 or more points in six games. The junior was also at her best late in the season, where she averaged 30.4 points per game over the Panthers final five contests, including a season high 37-point performance in Panther Valley’s district quarterfinal game. Maynard also did much more than score for PV as she averaged 8.2 rebounds per game, 4.1 steals per game and 3.2 assists per game.

“All-State is a well-deserved honor for Maddison. She is a kid who has put in relentless effort to better her game,” said Panther Valley head coach Rob Kovac. “I have had the pleasure of coaching numerous All-State players over the years, and she has earned her place at the table with some of the area’s all-time greats.”

Sevrain, who was chosen as this season’s Times News/Lehigh Valley Health Network Player of the Year, helped Northwestern to win its third consecutive Colonial League championship. Sevrain has been as solid of a player as they come, and she finished her Tigers career with a school-record 1,258 points. Sevrain averaged 12.2 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game this season.

This past season, Sevrain was selected as the Colonial League player of the Year.

“I am so happy and proud for Paige to receive this great honor. Paige is the ultimate team player and was always willing to sacrifice individual goals for team goals and team success,” said Northwestern head coach Chris Deutsch. “She takes immense pride in her craft and worked extremely hard at getting better.

“In addition to her basketball talents, Paige is an even better person off the court. She will always be revered here at Northwestern, leaving our program as the school’s all-time leading scorer.”
