Local Roundup: Results from April 20

Northwestern posted wins in multiple sports on Thursday.

The Tigers’ baseball team defeated Moravian Academy, while the boys lacrosse team downed Southern Lehigh.

BASEBALL

Northwestern-Moravian A.

Northwestern erupted for eight runs in the first inning and then cruised to a 13-1 Colonial League victory over Moravian Academy.

Winning pitcher Chase Moyer, who allowed just one hit and struck out eight, also starred at the plate. Moyer collected two extra base hits - double, triple - and knocked in three runs.

The Tigers, who have won three straight games, also received a triple and two RBIs from Eli Zimmerman, while Wesley George and Robert Croneberger both added a hit and two runs.

Northwestern is now 8-6 overall and 5-5 in the league. The Lions dropped to 1-9.

Nicholas Buchman pitched a five-hit shutout to lead Notre Dame Green Pond to an 11-0 Colonial League victory over Northern Lehigh.

James Cartier had two hits, one a triple, and three RBIs to lead the Crusaders.

For the Bulldogs, Brayden Tocci finished with a single and a double. Teammate Nick Buskirk also chipped in with two hits.

Nolehi fell to 3-11 overall and 3-8 in the league, while Notre Dame improved to 3-9 and 2-8.

Northern Lehigh’s Jordyn Hemingway had a big day at the plate, but it wasn’t enough for the Bulldogs as they dropped a 17-13 Colonial League decision to Notre Dame Green Pond.

Hemingway finished with two homers, a double, three runs and six RBIs. One of her homers was a grand slam in the seventh that cut an eight-run deficit to four.

The Bulldogs’ Cadence Peters collected four hits, scored twice and knocked in a run, while Kylee Snyder and Arabella Heintzelman both ended with two hits, a run and an RBI.

Claire Ceraul paced the Slaters with four hits - including a double and a homer. She scored two runs and knocked in three. Bangor’s Lauren Bjelobrk also belted a three-run homer.

Northern Lehigh is now 7-5 overall and 5-4 in the league. Notre Dame upped its marks to 5-7 and 3-6.

Palmerton-Bangor

Bangor snapped a scoreless tie with a three-run sixth inning and went on to post a 3-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Jamie Hendricks had two hits and a run to lead the Slaters, while Kacey Gonzalez added a pair of hits.

For the Blue Bombers, who fell to 7-4 overall and 6-4 in the league, Megan Matsko ended with two hits - one a double - and an RBI. Palmerton also received a pair of hits from Emily Christopher.

Bangor improved to 7-5 and 7-3.

Emmaus-Pleasant Valley

Danika Barthol excelled in the circle and at the plate to lead Emmaus to a 13-2 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory over Pleasant Valley.

Barthol allowed just three hits and struck out 11 over five innings to earn the win. Offensively, she collected three hits and knocked in four runs.

The Green Hornets, who have won seventh straight and are now 10-4, also received four hits and two runs from Abby Dear.

Brianca Prindham finished with two hits and an RBI for the Bears, who fell to 6-8.

Minersville

The Weatherly boys posted a split in Schuylkill League action.

The Wreckers rolled to a 100-32 victory over Shenandoah Valley, but dropped a 117-28 score to Minersville. The Weatherly girls ended up being swept.

Ian McLaurin finished first in the 100, while the Wreckers’ 1600 relay team of Jacob Parker, Michael Berger, Williams Sebastian and Niko Saldukas also registered a win.

In the girls meet, Weatherly’s Kelly Reiner won the javelin event.

Northampton-Pleasant Valley

Northampton swept Pleasant Valley in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference meet.

The Bears fell 97-53 in the boys meet and dropped an 85-65 decision in the girls competition.

Reese Ruggiero won three events for the PV girls, taking the pole vault, long jump and triple jump. Nemani Moore (200, 400) also captured a pair of wins.

In the boys meet, the Bears received a pair of wins from Julian Canela (shot out, discus).

BOYS LACROSSE

Southern Lehigh-Northwestern

Cade Christopher had six goals and three assists to help power Northwestern to a 13-6 victory over Southern Lehigh.

Austin Sosnovik finished with three goals for the Tigers, while Blaine Snyder added two tallies and two assists.

The winners, now 7-3, also received a goal and two assists from Braxton Lakatosh. Keeper Bailen Smargiassi registered nine saves.

Caiden Fleckenstein had three goals for the Spartans (0-9).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Moravian A.-Pleasant Valley

Rylee Rath and Devon Bush each scored five goals to help Pleasant Valley remained undefeated after a 17-4 rout of Moravian Academy.

Riley Green added two goals and Abygail Borger had seven saves for the Bears. Rath also finished with two assists, while Bush added one.

Megan Dadio led Moravian with four goals.

PV is now 11-0, while the Lions dropped to 5-3.

BOYS TENNIS

Colonial League Championships

Palmerton’s Justin Sebelin, Riley Fallon and Tyler Hager all placed fourth at the annual Colonial League Tennis championships.

The three Blue Bombers all recorded first-round victories before falling in the semifinal round and third-place matches.

Sebelin was seeded fourth at No. 1 singles, while Fallon (sixth seed at No. 2) and Hager (fifth seed at No. 3) both defeated higher-seeded opponents to reach the semis.
