A popular attraction is set to return at Slatington Elementary.

After a one-year absence, the Senior Citizen Holiday Program is back and will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday.Long a favorite of senior citizens, as well as the students, the event will consist of a turkey dinner, musical presentations from each grade level, as well as cookies baked by the children and their families.Also as part of the event, fourth-grade students will make ornaments, while fifth-grade students will make place mats that are laminated so that the senior citizens may take them home with them.In addition, the high school choir ensemble, the "Treble Makers", run by Rachel Reiter, will help set up, serve the food, and sing.Due to the recent renovation of the school, the program wasn't able to be held at the school last year, according to Lori Middaugh, co-event organizer.As a result, Middaugh said a power-point presentation was shown in classrooms that depicted pictures the students made of a winter scene shown to music."We're so glad the building is ready so we can do this program for the senior citizens," Middaugh said. "We were so sad that we couldn't have the program last year."Middaugh said the students get a real charge out of the activity."The students absolutely love it," she said. "They're really excited about it."Many, though not all, of those who attend are grandparents of the students, Middaugh said."We love to see the looks on their faces, see them clapping along, singing along," she said. "It's about bringing some joy to their holiday season."Middaugh said she, as well as Gail Lafferty and Janet Millen, do their best to help organize the event."We have a nice building to share with them," Middaugh said. "We're so glad we're able to open our facility."Transportation will be provided for senior citizens from the senior facilities in the Slatington community, Middaugh said."It's tremendous; they're so filled with joy," she said. "For some of them, this is their only outing."
