The operator of a dirt bike that crashed at 4:52 p.m. Wednesday off Running Valley Road in Jackson Township died about two hours after he was transported to the Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pocono, East Stroudsburg, according to state police at the Fern Ridge barracks.

Police said they were notified by the Monroe County Coroner’s Office at 7:16 p.m. that he was pronounced dead at the hospital from injuries.

Coroner Tom Yanac said a 17-year-old boy was killed. His name will be released when the family is ready.

Police said the crash occurred when the operator of the 2002 Kawasaki lost control of it in the dirt/gravel shoulder of the roadway. Police said he failed to regain control of the bike and was ejected off it, coming to rest off the right shoulder of the road.

The dirt bike came to rest about 148 feet off the right shoulder of the road.

Police were assisted at the scene by personnel from the Suburban EMS unit and the Jackson Township Fire Department.
