Tough going in West Penn

Residents of a neighborhood along Ash Circle, Ridge Road and Lime Kiln Drive in West Penn Township found it tough to get into or out of their neighborhood Thursday afternoon when days of heavy rain caused Lizard Creek to overflow its banks and flood two bridges that provide access to Route 895. The bridge at Ash Circle and Route 895 was opened in the evening.

Worse flooding closed the bridge at Ridge Road and Route 895, where deep water covered a large area of roadway.Compounding the problem, a stretch of Route 309 from Lime Kiln Road to Route 895 was closed. Many travelers on Route 309 north detoured onto Lime Kiln, but because both bridges to Route 895 were closed, had to turn around and go back out onto Route 309.

CHRIS PARKER/TIMES NEWS A bridge linking Ash Circle to Route 895 in West Penn Township was closed Thursday when the Lizard Creek flooded. Traffic trying to find a detour from a closed section of Route 309 was backed up at both the Ash Circle and Ridge Road bridges.
