Carbon sets process for appealing salaries

Carbon County employees who feel their new salaries are inadequate as a result of the salary study findings can now appeal for a review.

On Thursday, Commissioner Chris Lukasevich said that a formal process for challenging the new compensation was sent out Thursday morning to department heads and row officers.

Employees can now make an appeal that the job description that was used to justify the new compensation is not inclusive of all their responsibilities and supply a new, updated job description.

The formal process will then allow for a review of the new description to see if an increase should occur or if the findings of the salary study satisfy the position.

Carbon County commissioners went head to head with court and row officers in January over the new salary scale that was adopted in December.

At the time, several departments approved the proposed salary scales and then made additional motions for further increases of some positions. Some of those motions passed, while others failed.

A month later, the board of commissioners voted 2-1, with Commissioners’ Chairman Wayne Nothstein casting no votes, to not fund the additional motions over the original county proposed salaries.

Since then, the county salary board has told employees that a formal appeal process was being developed and would be out by the end of March.
