In January, Reading & Northern issued a report to media agencies, saying it handles 34,000 carloads of freight each year.
In 2022, it saw a 40 percent jump in the amount of coal it transports, and reported taking on more than 2,000 carloads of new business from the Tunkhannock, Wyoming County, Marcellus Shale terminal operated by Texas Sands.
“Reading & Northern also handles forest products, plastics, food products, metals and chemicals business,” the railroad reported, and estimated it at about 20,000 carloads each year.
“The routes are known, as well as the typical types of products and facilities served,” Matz said, adding that some of the commodities are reportable under certain regulations.
Reading & Northern did not respond to an interview request from the Times News.
