Reassessment Q&A sessions being held

If you live in Schuylkill County and have questions about the upcoming reassessment, you can get answers at public meetings starting soon.

One session will be held at 6 p.m. March 15 at the Tamaqua Area Middle School.

Others will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday (March 7) at the North Schuylkill Jr./Sr. High School and at 6 p.m. March 13 at the Pottsville Area DHH Lengel Middle School.

The sessions, hosted by the county along with Vision Government Solutions, are open to all county residents.

Vision Government Solutions, based in Hudson, Massachusetts, was hired by the county in December for $6.6 million to handle the reassessment, the county’s first since 1996.

The first step is to verify and update the descriptions of every property in the county. Trained data collectors will be doing this through next year.

Data collectors will have county identifications, marked vehicles, and will always knock on the door and leave information. Their task is to verify characteristics and measurements of buildings, and take pictures. They will never go inside homes.

Public cooperation is encouraged to ensure the most accurate information is on record. There will be multiple opportunities for property owners to verify their data later in the process.

The new assessments will be mailed in 2025, and will take effect in 2026.

Although all assessments will be brought current, the tax mileage rates will be lowered at the same time so that taxing bodies - school districts, municipalities and the county - collect the same net revenue.

The reassessment is being done by court order. The county in 2018 was sued by a Harrisburg nonprofit group, which alleged that because it had been so long since the last reassessment, the tax burden was being unfairly distributed in violation of state law. The county settled the suit last May.

Vision is building its county data collection team. The jobs pay $17 an hour, plus benefits for full time.
