MV downs Weatherly

LENOX - The final score doesn’t give justice to Weatherly’s performance.

The Wreckers may have been a huge underdog against top-seeded Mountain View on Wednesday in the opening round of the PIAA Class 1A 2/11 subregional girls basketball tournament.

They certainly didn’t play like it though, as for much of the game, the youthful Wreckers went toe-to-toe with the tournament-tested and much taller Eagles.

Eventually, host Mountain View wore down a Weatherly team that entered the contest with just seven victories on the season and pulled away for a 52-27 victory.

It wasn’t easy, however, as the Eagles (17-6) held a slim 20-15 lead early in the second half before taking control.

“We made some adjustments at the half, and it’s been that way for us throughout the season,” said Mountain View coach Bill Simons. “Once we were able to score a little more consistently and then press them, that turned it around.”

Before that, Weatherly was knocking the socks off the Eagles with a whole lot of hustle, and by limiting the home club’s shot attempts. Weatherly received great efforts from Abigail Paisley, Kelly Reiner Taylor Davidovich, Bethany Houser and Emma Kane.

All five of them stepped up defensively, flicking passes away or hitting the boards to limit the Eagles to one-and-done offensive sets.

Despite a significant height disadvantage, Weatherly also did a nice job keeping the Eagles’ heralded 6-2 freshman Addison Kilmer (14 points, 18 rebounds) in check early, while limiting 5-7 Lily Sedlak to just three of her 12 points in the first half.

In the second half, however, that duo broke loose to spark the Eagles.

“We had things pretty much under control in that first half,” said Jason Kane, who along with Chris Gaydoscik have been serving as interim coaches for Weatherly for much of the season. “I thought we played very well in the first half, but we kind of got away from the game plan.

“I thought the three-week layoff we had hurt us, too.”

Weatherly trailed just 10-8 after a quarter, and forged a 12-12 early in the second stanza tie thanks to points from Kane and Houser, with the former throwing in a ringtail howitzer from three-point range.

However, the Eagles caught some wind in their wings and reeled off an 8-0 run to leap in front 20-12 at halftime. Kilmer came on strong with a pair of post-up moves in the rally that was coupled with baskets from Taylor Neri and Clair Getz.

Then things would go array for the Schuylkill League representatives. The third quarter proved fatal as Weatherly committed 10 turnovers while the Eagles worked their press to perfection and zoomed to a commanding 41-19 lead through three quarters of play. Mountain View used runs of 8-0 and 11-0 to help break it open.

By the time the fourth quarter unfolded, the game Wreckers were growing weary, unable to answer the deficit.

“Hey, we get another shot Friday,” Kane said of the consolation game with Salem Christian - a team the Wreckers beat to open the season.

WEARING DOWN … Weatherly (7-16) grew leg weary in the second half, and with just three subs, it appeared to tire under the pressing defense applied by Mountain View.

BY THE NUMBERS … The much taller Eagles held a 41-34 rebounding edge. Besides Kilmer’s 18 rebounds, teammates Neri and Harvey had seven each. Weatherly was led by Kane with 10 boards, as the freshman played a great game. Houser and Paisley added five rebounds apiece. Houser was the top Wrecker scorer with nine points, while Reiner - who was a ball-of-fire all game long - added seven.
