Schools get grants to upgrade kitchens

Two local school districts received food equipment grants as part of $2.7 million awarded by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the state agency announced Wednesday.

Palmerton Area School District’s funding includes $8,708.92 for an electric convection oven at S.S. Palmer and $7,744.74 for a roll-thru refrigerator at Parkside Education Center, while Pleasant Valley School District for an electric convection steamer at its middle school.

“In order for students to learn, grow, and thrive, they need access to healthy and nutritious meals - both in and out of the classroom,” said Acting Secretary of Education Dr. Khalid N. Mumin. “The Food Service Equipment grants enable schools to have high-functioning equipment and well-equipped cafeterias so that they may better serve hungry minds and bellies each and every day.”

Ryan Kish, Palmerton’s business manager, said the decision on what equipment to submit the grant application for was made in consultation with the district’s food service director.

“The refrigerator will allow more healthy food items to be held on site and the oven will replace one that is currently on its last legs,” Kish said.

Funding for the grants was made available through the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Grants are awarded to schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program. Schools could use the grants to purchase or upgrade equipment such as refrigerators, freezers, stoves, and dishwashers.
