Weatherly school board sets graduation for June 2
The Weatherly Area school board set graduation for June 2 at its February meeting.
Because of a snow day Jan. 23, the board approved a regular school day on April 6, using up the third planned-for school make-up day built into the calendar. Superintendent Daniel Malloy said that in previous years there were only two days built into the calendar.
In personnel matters, the board approve the resignation of Jennifer Colecio, long-time special education/student support secretary. Her last day was Jan. 31.
The district filled the opening for a paraprofessional, hiring Billie Jo Steward who started Feb. 9.
Steph Yurchak was appointed varsity baseball coach at $3,175. Ryan Kately was named as varsity track and field coach at $3,200, and Paul DiGennaro as an assistant track and field coach at $2,100. Nicole Hinkle, head volleyball coach, resigned on Jan. 27, and assistant volleyball coach Teresa Hartz resigned Feb. 1.
Business manager Kenneth Kachurak reported that 45 properties in Kidder Township, mainly in Golden Oaks, were bought from the Carbon County repository, and will return to the tax rolls.
Dr. Brian Pipech, supervisor of special programs, reported that the Title 1 movie night was very well attended.
The district will send staff to a Pre-K conference to be held next month at the Kalahari Resort. Pipech said he is seeking grants.
Facilities manager William Moyer provided a list of what his maintenance priorities are, including getting the parts to get the second boiler back into operation, working to create the new trainer space (carpet, installing a phone line, installing a wall) which means moving the maintenance shop, and overseeing an update to the fire alarm system at the high school.
The board continues to have questions regarding the Carbon Career & Technical Institute budget, budget balance and spending. The board did vote to approve CCTI’s budget for the coming school year.
Also approved were use of facilities for:
• A Weatherly 5th and 6th grade basketball tournament Feb. 20-March 2 in the gyms of both buildings.
• The Weatherly Little League to use of middle school athletic fields and concession stand for baseball, softball, and Little League, from 3-9 p.m. March through November.
• A Title I Family Involvement Food Truck & Movie Event in the elementary school and parking lot on Friday, May 19 from 5-9 p.m.; and the WASD Art Department’s use of middle school facilities on Thursday, and Friday, May 11 and 12 for the Spring Art Show, to correspond with Spring Band and Chorus Concerts.
In committee reports, three more girls are needed to field a 7th and 8th grade softball team.
The Property Committee reports that field dirt will be applied to the softball and baseball fields when weather permits. Two more truckloads will be needed in addition to what is on hand now.
The Weatherly Area School Board meets next March 1 and 8 at 7 p.m.
