We're three weeks into grandparenthood and loving it.

Caroline's arrival was anticipated for months, yet the day she was born Aug. 27, still brought surprises. Jana's labor was long, much longer that I had hoped, but in the end both mother and daughter are doing well.Now that Caroline is here, I have another girl in my life to worry about.It seems I just can't get these missing children and women out of my mind.As each of national stories break, I cling to the hope the children and women are found safe, yet many are not.This past week we heard the latest story about a missing woman 24-year-old Annie Le who was in her lab at Yale University, and found dead on the day she had planned to marry. She was a grown woman looking forward to a happy life ahead of her. She thought she was in a safe area. She should have been safe. I only hope her killer is found and justice is served.Before that it was the heartbreaking story of Jaycee Dugard, who was snatched from the bus stop and was missing for 18 years that caught my attention. I feel so sad that Jaycee and her mother missed so many years together. Jaycee grew up without having a first sweet kiss, going to her junior prom, attending a football game and having teenage sleepovers or choosing her own husband. She never knew how the world was thinking about her, missing her and loving her until she was found. Now she is back safe with her mother, but she paid a big price with so many years of her life that are gone.I know from experience that having your children safe is a wonderful thing.That is one of the reasons I like my two sons-in-law so much. With these two fine men, Dennis and Scott, in their lives I know that someone is caring for my daughters.While that may not stop someone from snatching them, it does give me a level of hope that they are safe.The Jaycee Dugard story prompted some schools to change the way they look at children's' safety.Lehighton School District initiated a policy this year that children must be met by an "authorized" adult at the bus stop before they will release the children. If no one is at the bus stop, then the bus driver takes the child back to school.It seems so simple to keep the children safe.If such a simple idea keeps even one child safe, it is certainly worth the effort.It's a shame that we live in a world where a child cannot walk to the bus stop in clear sight of their own home and be snatched in daylight. That is what happened to Jaycee. She was even seen getting taken by her stepfather. He carried a burden of blame by his family for 18 years that he was somehow responsible for Jaycee being missing. Finally the poor man was found innocent by his family.I know that we will try to keep Caroline safe. She has a two sets of grandparents, aunts and uncles, plus family friends who will surround her and love her. It is true. It take a village to raise a child and we plan to be Caroline's village people.
