Tamaqua to induct seven into its Hall of Fame
The Tamaqua Area High School Athletic Hall of Fame Committee will induct its 22nd class into the Hall of Fame, which will include seven new individuals.
The ceremony will take place tonight at 6:40 before the Blue Raiders football game against Schuylkill Haven.Those being inducted include George Petrole, Jenna Demetriades Carlson, Nick Birosik, Bryant Butala, Dane DeWire, Kayla Hope, and Kelsey Patrick.Below are bios on each inductee.GEORGE PETROLEGeorge, member of the Class of 1972, was a four-year member of the swimming team and a two-year member of the track and field team for the Blue Raiders. He also participated in the yearly Gymnastic exhibition along with being a member of the golf club.For the swim team, George led the team in scoring his sophomore through senior years and qualified for the District 11 and PIAA state championships all four years. At that time, there was only one classification in swimming.He competed in 9 of the 11 events and held school or pool records in five events at his time of graduation. He was named captain and Most Valuable Swimmer his senior year.Upon graduation, George was offered the first-ever swim scholarship in Tamaqua history to attend Bloomsburg University. However, he attended the University of Miami where he swam and played golf.In 1984, George turned pro in golf as an assistant at the then Hershey Pocono Resort in White Haven. In 1988, he became the first Tamaqua graduate to be elected to membership in the Professional Golfers Association of America.George also served as an assistant pro at Valley Country Club in Hazleton; Head pro at Mahoning Valley Golf Club and Head pro and Director of Golf at Pocono Farms Country Club in Tobyhanna.George formed his own golf management and consulting company and was contracted to update the design and manage construction of Woodstone Country Club in Danielsville.He became a partner in the purchase of Mahoning Valley Golf Club, which was renamed Villas Crossings.From 2002-2006, George was Tamaqua's head golf coach. He had a career mark of 42-19 and coached the first and only female Schuylkill League champion from Tamaqua (Tabitha Brobst). He coached golfers that qualified for districts and regional championships at Tamaqua.He is a nationally published author on the game of golf and wrote a golf column for two local newspapers.He is a lifetime member of the PGA of America, and in 2014, was honored with membership in the prestigious Quarter Century Club of the PGA - the first and only Tamaqua graduate to do so.George was married to the former Claudia George for 29 years. He currently resides in Lehighton and Port St. Lucie, FL.JENNA DEMETRIADES CARLSONJenna, a member of the Class of 1998, was a four-year starter and letter winner in both basketball and softball and a member of the track team.She was a guard in basketball and finished with 832 career points, which currently ranks 16th on the Lady Raiders all-time scoring chart.She was a four-year starter on the softball team, where she split her time between center field, shortstop and third base.Jenna was one of the Schuylkill League and District 11's all-time top performers on the softball field, finishing her career with a .438 batting average.She also ran track her junior year, competing in the 100, 4x100, 400 and high and long jumps.She received a full scholarship to attend Bucknell University to play softball.Jenna was a four-year starter in center field for Bucknell and a four-time All-Patriot League selection. She was also selected to the Patriot League All-Decade team - one of only two active players to receive that honor.She started all 173 games of her career at Bucknell, finishing with a career batting average of .324; tied for sixth all-time in triples in a season; fifth all-time for hits in a season; and 10th all-time for both doubles, RBIs and runs scored in a season.She graduated from Bucknell with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration/Marketing major. Jenna is currently Vice President of Global Talent Acquisition at Merkle. Merkle is a leading global performance Marketing Agency.Jenna is married to Dan Carlson and they reside in Mount Airy, MD. They have two boys, Jack (4) and Ben (1).NICK BIROSIKNick, a member of the Class of 2002, was a four-year member of the cross country and track and field teams.In cross country, he was a four-time state qualifier and the 2000 Schuylkill League champion and 2001 District 11 Champion. In his senior year, he was a PIAA state medalist ,finishing 21st.In track, he was a member of the 2002 PIAA State champion 4x800 meter relay team, becoming one of only eight individuals in any sport in school history to win a PIAA State gold medal. All members of this state championship relay team were inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2008.He was also a district champion in the 3200 meter and 4x800 relay. In his senior year, he also qualified for the state championships in the 3200. In his junior year, Nick was Schuylkill League champion in the 3200.Nick continued his running and academic careers at Lafayette College, where he graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering.He currently works as a Process Engineer for AAK, USA in Port Newark, NJ.He is still an avid runner, and has qualified for the Boston Marathon twice. He is the son of Mike and Barbara Birosik. He is married to Lesley Wassef since 2012, and they reside in Highland Park, NJ.BRYANT BUTALABryant, a member of the Class of 2007, was a four-year member of the Blue Raider football team and the track and field squad.In track and field, he was an outstanding pole vaulter, qualifying for and earning two eighth-place medals at the PIAA State Championships. In his senior year, he vaulted 14-4 ¼, breaking a 26-year old school record - a mark which still stands today.He was undefeated in the event in dual meets and invitationals his junior and senior seasons.Bryant was the 2006 and 2007 Schuylkill League pole vault champion; 2006 and 2007 District 11 silver medalist; and 2007 PTFCA Indoor State Championship meet qualifier.After graduation, Bryant attended East Stroudsburg University, where he was a two-year member of the track and field team. He graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Leisure Service and Recreation Management.He also continued his athletic career, playing five years as a linebacker for the Panther Valley Breaker Boys of the semipro Arena Football League.Bryant is the son of Eugene and Joan Butala, and resides in Tamaqua. He is currently employed at AutoZone Distribution as a Professional Commercial Truck DriverDANE DEWIREDane, a member of the Class of 2011, was a four-year member of the swimming and diving team, where he was extremely successful in both swimming and diving. He served as team captain for three years.He was a four-time Schuylkill League Diving champion, and is the current record holder in the school's six- and 11-dive events, and also the Schuylkill League record holder in the 11-dive event. His school record score in the six-dive event is 322.20, and his 11-dive score is 494.50.He was a four-time District 11 medalist, including earning district gold in 2011, and being named the Diver of the Meet. He was a 2011 PIAA state finalist in diving. He also excelled in the 100-yard butterfly.After high school, Dane attended Penn State University, where he was a member of the Penn State Club Swimming. He held the Club 1-meter and 3-meter springboard records. In 2015-16, he was named MVP of the PSU Club Swimming.He was the diving coach for the 2012-13 Hazleton YMCA/YWCA divers, and was also the 2014 Tamaqua Blue Waves diving coach.He graduated from PSU in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, with a focus in Structural Engineering, and a minor in Residential Construction Engineering.Dane is the son of Nadine and Raymond DeWire, and has a brother Raymond and sister Deana. He is currently a Structural and Architectural Designer of residential and light commercial building projects for Glantz Engineering in State College. He is working toward his PA Professional Engineering license and plans to take the exam in 2020.KAYLA HOPEKayla, a member of the Class of 2012, was a three-sport standout, where she was a four-year varsity letter winner in soccer, basketball, and track and field.In soccer, she holds the career school record in assists with 39, and ranks third on the all-time goal scorers chart with 63. She was a member of two District 11 Championship soccer teams, qualifying twice for the PIAA state playoffs. She was the 2011 Soccer Scholar-Athlete.In basketball, she currently ranks 22nd on the all-time scoring chart with 665 points. She was a member of two Schuylkill League championship squads; two District 11 championship teams and a District 11 silver medal team; and teams that qualified for the PIAA state playoffs three times.Kayla was most noted for track and field, where she was the 2011 PIAA state champion in the long jump with a school-record leap of 18-10 ¾. That same year at states, she finished 10th in the 200, and qualified in the triple jump. In her senior year, she was a PIAA state silver medalist in the long jump, and also qualified in the 200 run and as a member of the 4x100 relay team.At the District 11 championships, Kayla earned golds in the long jump (2), 200 (1) and 4x100 relay (1) and one silver each in the long jump, triple jump and 200.Kayla currently holds school records in track in the long jump, and as a member of the 4x100 relay team.Kayla attends Misericordia University, where she will obtain her Doctorate in Physical Therapy this spring. In 2015, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Misericordia in psychology. She is currently volunteering her time in rural Jamaica, where she is working at a Stroke Camp providing intensive neurological rehab and community reintegration to stroke survivors that are underserved.She is the daughter of Robert and Denise Hope. Her brother is Tyler. Her mother was inducted into the fifth class of this Hall of Fame in 2000.KELSEY PATRICKKelsey, a member of the Class of 2012, was a four-year standout on the track and field team and was a member of the cross country team her senior year.In cross country, she finished fifth at the District 11 championships, which qualified her for the PIAA State Championships in Hershey.In track, she was a member of the 2010 4x800 relay team that won the District 11 championship, and qualified for the PIAA State Championships. Her senior year, she was District 11 champion in both the 1600 and 3200 to earn a trip to the state championships.She currently attends Lebanon Valley College, and is in her sixth year of the Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. At LVC, she participated in four years of both track and cross country, where she was a three-time Academic All-American. She was also a four-time qualifier for the NCAA Cross Country Championships. She was the 2013 NCAA Mideast Region Runner of the Year for cross country, and was a two-time conference Runner of the Year and the 2012 conference Rookie of the Year for cross country.Kelsey was the recipient of the 2016 MAC Scholar Athlete of the Year award for cross country, and the 2016 Outstanding Female Athlete at LVC. She currently holds seven records at LVC in indoor and outdoor track. She also holds the cross country 6K school record.She is the daughter of Rich and Penny Patrick.
