For the first time in the 137-year history of Lehighton Borough, a woman became a member of the borough council.

Bessie Bauchspies was sworn in by her husband, Mayor Wilbur “Cap” Bauchspies, during the reorganizational meeting held last night.

This is her first venture into politics. Her husband, on the other hand, is a veteran having served the borough for 39 years. He also swore in newly-elected council member William Bernstein.

During the reorganization, Grant Hunsicker, who is beginning his 25th year on the council, was unanimously re-elected president. Renamed vice president was Ned Harleman.
