2022 in Review: Banks closing area branches

Be it in Carbon, Monroe, Schuylkill or Lehigh counties, various financial institutions shuttered their doors this year.

Earlier this month, the Truist bank branch in Weatherly announced it will close at noon on March 28, according to an official from the corporation.

The bank is in the process of notifying clients of the upcoming closure, said spokeswoman Kristen Williams.

Truist’s exit will leave the borough without a bank - but clients will be encouraged to visit other locations.

Williams said no employees will lose their jobs.

Truist clients can access their accounts through branches and ATM networks, along with telephone banking and 24-hour delivery channels such as online and mobile banking, she added.

The bank was the former BB&T branch until BB&T merged with SunTrust Bank to become Truist Financial in December 2019.

Carbon County

Elsewhere in Carbon, the KeyBank branch at 372 Delaware Ave. in Palmerton closed at 3 p.m. Dec. 2, according to a letter sent out to customers on Sept. 1. It was combined with KeyBank’s Lehighton branch at 904 Blakeslee Boulevard Drive E.

The original bank building was built by Citizens Bank, before it was morphed into several other bank companies including Harleysville National Bank, as well as First Niagara Bank. The closing means that just one bank, First Northern is located in the Palmerton borough.

Monroe County

KeyBank’s Kresgeville Branch at 543 Interchange Road closed on April 1, requiring customers to travel 14 miles to the Lehighton branch.

Schuylkill County

Among other branch closings are the former Mid Penn branch near Orwigsburg, and Santander Bank at 408 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Lehigh County

It was announced in May that KeyBank’s branch at 502 Main St., Slatington would be consolidated with its Whitehall branch at 271 MacArthur Road on Dec. 2, according to Karen Crane, senior communications manager.

Crane said a letter was sent out on May 19 to its Slatington branch clients notifying them of the consolidation.

Nearby KeyBank branches are located at 4421 Lehigh Drive in Walnutport and 904 Blakeslee Blvd. Drive E. in Lehighton.

KeyBank’s Slatington branch was the latest in a long line of branches set to close locally since the pandemic began.

On the same stretch, Wells Fargo & Co. closed its 541 Main St., Slatington, branch Aug. 3.
