Schuylkill sets row office salaries

In a minutes-long meeting Monday evening, Schuylkill County commissioners set salaries for elected officials from 2024 through 2027.

The salaries are frozen at 2022 rates.

“We’re having to say no to a lot of requests of raises,” said Commissioners Chairman Barron L. Hetherington. “Senior citizens are having trouble paying for heating oil, and food prices keep going up and up like crazy. It’s just not a good time to raise salaries.”

All three commissioners agreed to freeze the salaries, he said.

County commissioners traditionally set the salaries for those elected officials to come.

Hetherington said he spoke with Controller Sharyn Yackenchick; Coroner Dr. David J. Moylan III, Prothonotary Bridget I. Miller; Recorder of Deeds Ann Dudish; Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans Court Theresa Santai-Gaffney; and Treasurer Linda L. Yeich.

All of them agreed to the freeze, he said.

He said he didn’t talk with Sheriff Joseph G. Groody or Clerk of Courts Maria T. Casey.

The freeze means salaries are frozen at these rates:

Two commissioners, $62,701.81; commissioners chairman, $65,427.96.

All three commissioners’ four-year terms end in 2024.

Controller (2022-2025), $58,613.72; Recorder of Deeds (2022-2025), $58,613.72; Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans Court (2020-2024), $64,067.21; Sheriff (2022-2025), $58,613.72; Coroner (2022-2025), $46,345.96; Prothonotary (2020-2024), $58,613.72; Clerk of Courts (2020-2024), $58,613.72; Treasurer (2022-2025), $58,613.72.

The District Attorney’s (2022-2025) $196,119 salary is set by state law.
