Carbon man sentenced in domestic incident

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Thursday after pleading guilty in a domestic violence case.

Michael Halulko, 34, of Palmerton, pleaded guilty to one count of terroristic threats for an incident on Sept. 26 at 6:22 p.m.

State police at Lehighton responded to the area of 2230 Fireline Road, Lower Towamensing Township, for a report of a simple assault incident. A 34-year-old woman from Lehighton showed signs of bodily injury. The suspect, identified as Halulko, had left the scene before police arrived.

He was later taken into custody.

In a plea deal with the district attorney’s office, two counts of simple assault were dropped.

He also previously entered a guilty plea to a charge of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine. He was arrested by state police on Nov. 22, 2021, along North Street in Lehighton. Troopers were serving a warrant when they found drugs on him.

The woman in the assault case told Judge Joseph J. Matika that she and Halulko had a child together. She said she had a protection from abuse order against Halulko and there is currently no custody order in place.

She told police that the day of the incident he struck her and also threatened to kill her.

On the threats count Matika sentenced him to serve 9 to 23 months in prison followed by one year of probation. On the drug count he was sentenced to serve 6 to 23 months in prison with the term running concurrent to the threats charge. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, attend and successfully complete a anger management course, render 75 hours of community service, supply a DNA sample, make restitution to the victim for $606, have no contact with the victim, pay court costs of over $1,000 and pay a $50 per month supervision fee.

Halulko, who has been in prison on the charges, was given credit for 99 days already served.
